RYA Training Centre

RYA practical courses
On the simple basis that "if you can't beat them, then join them", Centaur Sailing Limited highly recommends John Goode's Southern Sailing School for your practical course. The evidence: when Rod did his practical teaching it was always for John at Southern Sailing!

  • Unbeatable but simple philosophy: "it's much more than just a holiday ... gain experience by doing everything you'd need to be able to do on your own boat".
  • Southern Sailing doesn't offer the "zero to hero" fast-track programme from beginner to Yachtmaster in a mind-numbing 14-17 week course. John and all his instructors far prefer to teach the RYA Cruising Scheme as they believe it was intended, at a pace to suit the individual with time for students to consolidate what they have learned before aspiring to the next level of expertise.
  • Southern Sailing offers all the practical courses in the RYA Cruising Scheme BUT only with experienced instructors so students can be confident they'll receive the highest quality of tuition.
  • Although the RYA allows a maximum of 5 students per instructor, Southern Sailing goes a step further and has a maximum of 4 students per boat to help ensure everyone gets as much experience, insight and personal development from their course as possible. What's more, there are no hidden extra costs.
  • John Goode is one of the best known names in yachting and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation in recognition of his special contribution to teaching navigation. You really can tell when you join a course with any one of his instructors that they completely "sign-up" to John's learn-by-doing approach - you can even expect, after a good briefing as to what will happen, for a course student to be asked to take the helm as the boat leaves the dock for the first time but never fear, the instructor is always close to hand with a word of guidance to help out if necessary.
  • See what Southern Sailing has to offer by visiting their website or better still talking to Wally Newton or Steve White on 01489 575511 (0900 to 1800, 7 days a week) for friendly helpful advice.
