Centaur Sailing Limited: High quality tuition at reasonable cost.
RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased (theory) distance learning course
- Our slogan 'High quality tuition at reasonable cost' really says it all, we strive to offer the best quality tuition that it's possible to get. At the same time we are well aware that our course fees are the most reasonable to be found, so we don't offer or negotiate discounts. However, if a couple were embarking on a course together, one way to save money would be for one to enrol on a full-support course and the other on a no-support course. If the person with the full-support course then acts as a mouthpiece for both, then not only does the second person get indirect support but if the two people compare and agree their module answers (not allowed for assessments) then they can both benefit from the marking given to the full-support student.
- This is the Royal Yachting Association’s advanced level course for anyone wishing to extend their knowledge of navigation to include offshore (up to 12 miles from shore for Coastal Skipper or 150 miles for Yachmtaster Offshore) and night passages. In cases where the pre-requisite RYA Day Skipper shorebased (theory) satisfactory course completion certificate, or a verifiable equivalent, cannot be shown to us then we will only accept enrolment on a 'no-support' course, i.e. not on a 'full-support' course.
- The course is conducted by e-mail and the notes are supplied on a CD-ROM allowing students to study when not connected to the internet.
- To get the most from this substantial course, students are advised to allow approximately 63 hours for the study of 464 pages of notes (in PDF format suitable for Windows or Mac) and conscientious completion of all the 'Student Marked Questions' contained in the notes, the answers follow at the end of each module, which are an essential contributor to the successful completion of this course for students on both the full-support course and the no-support course.
- Centaur Sailing doesn't subscribe to "fast-track" methods and students seeking just to acquire a certificate, with less regard to the acquisition of firmly founded skills and knowledge, are likely to find that a Centaur Sailing course is unsuitable for their needs.
- In addition to the CD-ROM containing the course notes, students receive: paper and electronic versions of RYA Training Charts 3 and 4 (Northern Hemisphere). Please note that the electronic version, designed by the Admiralty in association with the Royal Yachting Association is designed for Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP or Vista and doesn't work on a Mac computer.
- There are 3 assessment papers with a guide time of 90 minutes each for the meteorology and collision regulations papers and 2 hours for the chartwork paper. The successful completion of these leads to the award of a genuine RYA course certificate. To help students prepare for their assessments, whether they have opted for a full-support or a no-support course, all students first complete 3 mock assessment papers on which feedback is given as a focus for final revision. The mock papers also give a 'feel' of what to expect. All the assessments are conducted by e-mail and may be 'sat' at home. The cost of these 6 assessments and issue of the certificate are included in the course fee.
- Working towards MCA Large Yacht Qualifications such as Officer of the Watch or Master 3000?
- If so, then the assessments at the end of this course must be taken under invigilated exam conditions at your own additional cost at either Centaur Sailing or by agreement at another RYA Training Centre.
- If not, then the assessments may be taken at home and you can self-certify that you sat them under examination conditions.
- If you aren't sure which of the two above are applicable to you, please don't hesitate to telephone us for further advice based on your own situation.
- Please note that these points do not relate to a 'Commercial Endorsement' which is something completely different and not affected by the length of any vessel on which you may wish to work.
